Mulberry – Natural Support for the Liver

Mulberry – Natural Support for the Liver

"Mulberry harms neither the healthy nor the sick” – these words are attributed to Hildegard of Bingen, the medieval abbess, herbalist, and author of medical works. In her understanding of health, she emphasized that nature provides gentle, harmonizing, and safe remedies. One of them was mulberry – a fruit she especially recommended for liver ailments.

Mulberry – A Fruit with Remarkable Properties

Most commonly used is White mulberry, although Black mulberry is also valued. These fruits are rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, iron, and numerous plant compounds with anti-inflammatory effects.

Modern research suggests that mulberry may help protect liver cells from oxidative stress, regulate blood sugar levels, and support metabolism. Thanks to these properties, its traditional use finds support in contemporary scientific understanding.

Mulberry Wine

Hildegard wrote:

“Whoever suffers from the liver should often drink mulberry wine as a beverage, for liver ailments frequently arise from an excess of blood, which mulberry wine soothes again.”

In her medical framework, liver problems were associated with imbalance within the body. Mulberry wine was believed to have a regulating and calming effect, helping to restore harmony.

Dried Mulberries in the Daily Diet

Dried mulberries can be incorporated into everyday meals. Added to oatmeal, yogurt, or herbal infusions, they provide natural nutritional support. Traditionally, they have been considered helpful in cleansing and strengthening the liver, supporting its natural functions.

A Return to Balance

In Hildegard’s teaching, mulberry symbolizes gentleness and balance. It is a fruit that, as she wrote, “harms neither the healthy nor the sick.” Including it in the daily diet may be a simple step toward a more mindful and natural approach to health, especially in supporting the liver – one of the body’s most vital organs.
