Plum Water – Natural Care for Hair and Scalp

Plum Water – Natural Care for Hair and Scalp

As early as the Middle Ages, Hildegard of Bingen described natural ways to care for health and beauty. In her well-known work Physica, she also mentions a remarkable preparation for hair care – plum water made from the ash of the bark and leaves of the plum tree.

St. Hildegard’s Original Recommendation

“From the bark and leaves of this tree prepare ash, and from this ash make a lye. If your head is covered with scales or afflicted with scabies, wash it often with this lye, and it will become beautiful and many fine hairs will grow on it. (…) It also supports the growth of beautiful hair if the scalp itself is healthy.”
St. Hildegard of Bingen, Physica

According to this medieval recipe, the ash from plum bark and leaves was mixed with water to create a lye solution, which was then used to cleanse and care for the scalp.

How Does Plum Water Work?

Traditionally, this preparation is believed to:

  • help care for an oily scalp,

  • reduce excess sebum production,

  • help eliminate dandruff,

  • support scalp regeneration,

  • help limit excessive hair loss, especially when associated with hormonal imbalance.

In Hildegard-inspired natural medicine, plum liquid is considered one of the basic external remedies used to support healthy, strong, and dense hair.

How to Use Plum Water

The preparation should always be diluted with water before use and applied to the scalp after washing the hair.

Instructions:

  1. After washing your hair, gently massage the diluted liquid into the scalp.

  2. Do not rinse it out.

  3. Dry your hair with a hair dryer.

  4. Repeat the treatment regularly for several weeks.

Suggested 8-Week Treatment Plan

Week 1
Every other day – dilution 1:3 (1 part liquid, 3 parts water).

Week 2
Every other day – dilution 1:2.

Weeks 3–8
Twice a week – dilution 1:1.

With proper and consistent use, visible improvements may appear after about two months.

Natural Care Inspired by Tradition

Although this recipe comes from many centuries ago, it still inspires people seeking natural methods of hair and scalp care. Plum water described by St. Hildegard is an example of a simple plant-based preparation that reflects a return to traditional approaches to health and beauty.

Regular scalp care—regardless of the chosen method—remains one of the key factors in maintaining strong, healthy hair.
