Wormwood Oil- support during cold season
Wormwood has held a special place in Hildegardian medicine for centuries. Saint Hildegard of Bingen regarded this herb as one of nature’s most valuable gifts. In her work Physica, she wrote:
“Wormwood is very warm, highly effective, and excels at overcoming all forms of exhaustion.”
One of the traditional uses of wormwood is the preparation of wormwood oil, which, according to Hildegard’s teachings, supports the body particularly during respiratory discomfort.
Saint Hildegard’s Recipe
In Physica, we find the following description:
“Pour its juice into olive oil, so that the oil exceeds it by two parts. Then warm the mixture in a glass vessel in the sun and preserve it for a year. If a person suffers from discomfort in or around the chest and therefore coughs, anoint the chest with this remedy.”
Why Use Wormwood Oil?
In Hildegardian medicine, wormwood oil is often referred to as “the oil for coughs.” Traditionally, it has been used as a supportive remedy during times when the body is more vulnerable to seasonal illnesses, especially throughout the colder months of the year.
A gentle massage of the chest and sides of the body with wormwood oil may promote a feeling of relaxation, warmth, and respiratory comfort. Traditionally, it has been used to support wellbeing during:
- Coughs
- Colds and seasonal flu
- Bronchial discomfort
- Chest discomfort associated with persistent coughing
How to Use Wormwood Oil
Gently massage a few drops of wormwood oil into the chest. After application, it is recommended to keep warm and allow the body to rest.
Important Information for Children
Although wormwood oil has traditionally been used for children, caution is advised. Some individuals may experience an allergic skin reaction.
Before first use, perform a patch test by applying a single drop of oil to a small area of skin. If redness, irritation, or itching occurs, discontinue use.
Tradition and Nature Working Together
Saint Hildegard’s approach to health was based on harmony between the human body and nature, supporting the body's natural vitality. Wormwood oil is one example of a simple traditional preparation that has been valued for generations as part of home care and seasonal wellness practices.
While natural remedies can be a valuable complement to a healthy lifestyle, persistent or severe symptoms should always be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.
