St. Hildegard says about bitters, regardless of the type, " whoever has a fever, should take bitters, crush them carefully, and then fill a cup halfway with the crushed or grated [plant]. Then he should pour good wine into it to the brim and leave it overnight. In the morning he should fill up the wine again and drink it on an empty stomach. This should be done for three or five days, and health will be restored, because the heat of bitters mixed with the heat of wine and taken in this way in a drink also drives away fevers, if it is kept in this way overnight, so that it is better combined with the wine."
